Invest in the Best and the Brightest
The current school year is winding down, making way for summer vacation, camps, temporary jobs, and other seasonal activities for the busy students of the East Falls area.
But just because the final bell has only just rung doesn’t mean that it’s too soon to start thinking about what next year will bring! One of the many perks of living in an up and coming townhome community like The Overlook is that it’s located near so many if the area’s most prestigious educational institutions. Here, our younger residents have easy access to respected campuses and charter schools that are busy pushing boundaries and creating new opportunities in the classroom.
William Penn Charter School
William Penn Charter School – or, Penn Charter – lives up to its history as the fifth oldest school in the country, and the longest-standing Quaker school in the world by upholding its standards of mutual respect, equality, and community. It made its home right here in East Falls in the 1920s, opening its doors to students in pre-K to high school seniors. Its campus provides plenty of sprawling lawns and athletic fields for active academics, and bolsters a love of the arts as well as the sciences. According to the school administration, the optimal times to apply to attend Penn Charter are before applicants have started pre-K, kindergarten, sixth, seventh or ninth grades, as those are the most common entry points. However, if spots are open in other grades, new students will be considered then, too.
Eastern Academy Charter School
It’s not hard to think big when this is a common phrase around campus. And at Eastern Academy Charter School (EACS), the school-university partnership makes it so that not only are students given the encouragement to aim for loftier goals, but the opportunity is built right into the curriculum. Influenced by Eastern University’s social justice ideals and commitment to the greater Philadelphia community, EACS currently serves students attending seventh to twelfth grades. Many of its core principles, like the importance of internships, project-based learning, and integrating academics and social principles, are directly geared toward preparing the students for college and the professional atmosphere beyond that. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, until seats are filled for the upcoming academic year.
Wissahickon Charter School
With two campuses in the Philadelphia area, the Wissahickon Charter School accepts students in kindergarten and up until eighth grade. The academics are based on an environmental focus that stimulates intellectual and social growth, all in service to preparing each student for the education to come in higher grades. In fact, because the curriculum has shown so much success among its students thus far, the second location has only been operational since 2014! With a holistic approach to education, Wissahickon Charter School instills an equal regard for the individual and the greater community. New students are accepted based on an enrollment lottery, due to the continued popularity of the school.
