Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth
With all of the Halloween candy displayed in every grocery and convenience store, it’s getting harder to ignore an insistent sweet tooth! But if you’re going to cave, The Overlook staff recommends giving into the really good stuff.
Philadelphia was actually something of a chocolate-making hub once upon a time, when its industrial chops were the best around. That tradition continues even to today, with specialty shops and signature treats sweetening our days. Check out a few while you’re in and around the city this fall!
Mueller’s Chocolate Company
Think you know chocolate? Think again! At Mueller’s Chocolate Company, you don’t just get your normal fare, though there are plenty of chocolate turtles to go around. No, this chocolatier is probably best known for custom confections in the most unusual shapes you’ll find just about anywhere. Proudly boasting that it is the “home of the chocolate covered onion,” Mueller’s offers all your favorite treats alongside finely crafted, anatomically correct replicas of the human brain, heart, liver – you name it!
John Lerro Candies
John Lerro Candies definitely keeps it in the family. Now on its third-generation owner, the shop provides both the classics and custom creations, all of which are made to order from the newer establishment just outside Darby. But you can still pop into the old shop and grab some of the staples: chocolate-covered pretzels and graham crackers, for example. Or, try something new like the potato chips!
Marcie Blaine Artisanal Chocolates
There’s nothing quite like a snack and a show, and at Marcie Blaine Artisanal Chocolates, you can watch the masters at work. These delicacies are made in-house, with organic ingredients sourced from Lancaster County and nearby farms. But Marcie Blaine doesn’t just have her hands in the chocolate-making business, and her signature treats give her away. The chocolates are made using unique, regional flavors found at her restaurants in Spain, Mexico and the Mediterranean, which means that no two varieties can be mistaken one for another.
And newer to Center City, New Jersey-based Classic Cake brings with it custom candies and desserts that will have your mouth watering in no time. Pastry chef Robert Bennett has been in with the business for more than a decade, and Classic Cake has been churning out cakes, cookies, chocolates, and other decadent delights for more than 30 years. It’s definitely worth stopping into if you’re out in the city for the day!
